This article is designed to give an overview of the multi-session features in the Live 3.0 interviewing platform
Background: Traditional in-person interviewing can vary from customer to customer. While the majority of Live Interviews that take place on the HireVue platform are between one candidate and one interviewer, there are times when a candidate needs to interview with multiple interviewers at different times on the same day. Multi-Session Interviewing is designed to meet this need.
What it is: Multi-Session Interviewing allows customers to schedule one candidate for multiple sessions with various interviewers in distinct sessions--mimicking a candidate coming into an office and meeting with various interviewers/groups on a given day.
Sample schedule:
In the above example, the candidate would be meeting from 10am until 12pm in four distinct sessions. Each individual session can have up to seven interviewers. This schedule is displayed to both the candidate and all interviewers during the Live Interview.
Recommendation: HireVue Multi-Session Live Interviews are designed to have multiple sessions on one interview day. If sessions need to take place on different days, it is recommended that new interviews be created within the position. This ensures that candidates have invitations for each day with distinct information to avoid confusion on everyone’s calendars.
How to use: Multi-session interviews are available to all customers without additional feature switches being enabled. Creating a position in HireVue for multi-session is very similar to single-session interviews.
During position creation, there is the opportunity to add sessions at the position and candidate levels.
-
- Adding at the position level: This essentially creates a ‘template’ for how many sessions will be conducted by every candidate added to that position within HireVue. Each time a candidate is added, they will have the same number of sessions to be scheduled based on what was added when the position was first created.
-
- Adding at the candidate level: This allows flexibility for each candidate added to move around sessions and have a different number of sessions from the position.

You have the opportunity to name each session and add the desired interviewers to each session:
Once in the interview, all interviewers and the candidate see the schedule. This helps to communicate to all involved parties what is happening and keeps the interview on track. In the example below, Jacquiline is the interviewer for the second session and she sees on the right side that the first session with Aaron has been completed. She only has permissions to control her assigned session.
Once Jacquiline has completed her session, she can leave/end and make Kiara available for the next session to begin.
If a session is still in progress and an interviewer who is scheduled for the next session joins, they will see a message indicating there is a session in progress and they cannot start their session until it’s complete.
On the candidate side, they see only the schedule and the chat--none of the other controls/evaluation tools that an interviewer sees in the scorecard:
Once an interviewer has ended a session, the candidate goes back to the lobby to be available for the next session to begin. In the example below, the first session is over and the candidate is back in the lobby waiting for the next session:
Once a multi-session interview has been completed, and if the interview was recorded, each session is available for review in the HireVue Evaluator and the interviews are available for additional sharing, as needed.
Feel free to create a multi-session test interview with your colleagues and begin using within your organization!
